Enjoyed In Search of Powder. I grew up skiing in the West but presently reside in Stowe, Vermont. Our ski town, as with many ski towns in the Northeast, hasn't changed much since the 70's & 80's. It has not seen much commercial development. It is actually still possible for a ski bum, per your definition from the book, to exist that way in the Northeast. Not in great numbers, but I have met many 15-20 year residents who can find work year round, share an apartment with roommates, and get 75-100 days of skiing or boarding in. They take jobs that pay $10-20/hour and make it work. Its expensive to live here, but not as much when compared to South Shore, Telluride, Mammoth, Park City and the other towns from your book. I myself luckily have a job that pays a nice enough salary and allows me to live in a ski town and still get 62 days on the mountain this past ski season. Yeah, yeah, Eastern skiing gets ragged on, but it would be interesting to investigate if the "traditional" ski bum still exists out here. Possibly it does. I've had several sightings...
